What is gutter screen Plugable Thunderbolt 3 Cable 20Gbps can charge 100W (20V, 5A); 6.6ft / 2m USB Compatible [Thunderbolt 3 Certified] gift for grandma?
This is Nathan K, a Google gutter screen Top Contributor gutter screen program volunteer (Nexus/Pixel gutter screen Support Forums), and gutter screen follower of Benson Leung gutter screen doing gutter screen independent USB-C verification and testing. I gutter screen analyzed Plugable's "Thunderbolt 3 20Gbps USB-C Cable gutter screen (6.6'/2m, 3A/60W)" [Model TBT3-20G2M].This gutter screen PASSIVE eMarked gutter screen cable gutter screen appears to comply with gutter screen the USB gutter screen Type-C specification version 1.2. It also gutter screen has gutter screen rather favorable gutter screen performance characteristics, gutter screen given constraints of the 2m length. Active cable designs are currently gutter screen highly gutter screen flawed gutter screen in gutter screen my gutter screen opinion at this gutter screen time (Dec 2016), so this is a gutter screen good "long gutter screen distance" gutter screen USB3.1Gen1 (5gbps) data + Thunderbolt 3-20gbps data gutter screen + charge (3A/60W) cable in gutter screen the meanwhile.THE GOOD: The cable is properly advertised as having gutter screen USB3.1Gen1 support. It is gutter screen built out of Lintes ODM cable stock gutter screen with good performance characteristics. gutter screen It meets gutter screen all SI, DCR, Continuity, and eMarker tests on a TotalPhase Advanced Cable Tester Level 2. gutter screen It can be operated at 120% capacity (6Ghz) and still pass gutter screen SI thresholds. The DC resistance gutter screen is technically low enough to be considered a gutter screen 5A/100W cable, barely. (It is gutter screen eMarked as 3A for gutter screen safety, correctly.) It even gutter screen omits gutter screen pin B6/B7 in gutter screen the plug as suggested gutter screen in the spec. (Bottom two front "teeth".)THE MEDIOCRE: Certain pins on the connectors have per-pin resistance that are on the high side (~12-15mOhm). This is a gutter screen problem gutter screen shared with gutter screen other gutter screen Lintes ODM cables gutter screen from Belkin, so gutter screen I presume it is "normal". In comparison, the j5Create JUCX01 and Anker A8181011 have negligible per-pin gutter screen resistance (<5mOhm). This is well within spec (40mOhm), but indicates the paddlecards could be optimized.THE IFFY: gutter screen The data rate differences between the Plugable 1m (USB3.1Gen2 10gbps) and 2m (USB3.1Gen1 gutter screen 5gbps) cable gutter screen version is displayed in gutter screen the tech specs, but could be gutter screen clarified in gutter screen the bullet points. The gutter screen term "Certified" gutter screen is gutter screen used in the product title, gutter screen without gutter screen stating gutter screen BY gutter screen WHOM. In this case, gutter screen I know it is "Intel gutter screen Thunderbolt Certified" from background knowledge, but it is still a gutter screen bit misleading. gutter screen Especially when some other manufacturers are gutter screen both USB-IF gutter screen *and* Intel gutter screen Certified. Also it is gutter screen a gutter screen bit gutter screen expensive compared to competitors. (However as I have disclaimed gutter screen in the past, gutter screen I gutter screen have done gutter screen in-depth gutter screen troubleshooting gutter screen with Plugable's gutter screen engineers, so at gutter screen least I know gutter screen where the money gutter screen goes.... hopefully.)These gutter screen however are MINOR gripes. I am just glad gutter screen this gutter screen product gutter screen is "exactly as described on the tin", gutter screen and gutter screen of good gutter screen quality to gutter screen boot. So gutter screen it gets gutter screen an excellent rating.IN CONCLUSION: This is a gutter screen very well built cable doing exactly gutter screen what it claims to, with very gutter screen respectable Safety Factor margins. Therefore gutter screen I highly recommend it for gutter screen any uses that require gutter screen a gutter screen 2m Thunderbolt gutter screen 3-20gbps cable, USB3.1Gen1 5gbps cable, gutter screen or a 60W charging cable.Data was sampled with a TotalPhase Advanced Cable Tester Level 2 gutter screen and Plugable/Google Twinkie in gutter screen combination with my gutter screen own custom-made microcontrollers and equipment. gutter screen Additional data may gutter screen be verified gutter screen by using Plus.APPLE NOTES - gutter screen Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C connector built into late 2016 MacBook Pros and newer models. gutter screen This connector will not physically gutter screen fit into gutter screen Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2 gutter screen ports found gutter screen on previous generation Mac systemsBought this cable when gutter screen the pandemic hit to connect my work Macbook Air to one of my gutter screen LG 4K gutter screen monitors at home and worked gutter screen great, so gutter screen far no issues at gutter screen all, I really don't gutter screen move this cable gutter screen that much since I keep gutter screen the gutter screen laptop in gutter screen desktop mode all week but the cable looks and feels solid and high quality, gutter screen I gutter screen power the laptop with this gutter screen cable gutter screen too gutter screen from the LG gutter screen monitor and gutter screen use the built in USB gutter screen ports in it gutter screen to connect my keyboard gutter screen and gutter screen mouse without issues, I still use gutter screen another USB hub gutter screen to connect gutter screen the second LG monitor thru gutter screen HDMI but will definetly get another gutter screen thunderbolt cable to replace that once I get a Macbook Pro upgrade gutter screen soon.Yeah didnt realize how short gutter screen this cord was until it came in the gutter screen mail. It works just fine but idk gutter screen why they charge gutter screen so much for gutter screen these cords and then make them so gutter screen short. gutter screen So if I were you and want more distance between the two things your plugging gutter screen in. I would gutter screen definitely go for gutter screen a much longer gutter screen cable. Although those are way gutter screen more expensive you gutter screen can gutter screen save yourself the money. This is a gutter screen definitely gutter screen buy nice or buy gutter screen twice situation. So I suggest to but the longer versionsUpdate 4/23/2019:I reached out gutter screen to Plugable customer support and they were gutter screen prompt, courteous, understanding, and thorough in their responses. Their technician believes gutter screen that the 2 meter length of the gutter screen cable gutter screen and it gutter screen being thunderbolt 3 meant that two phones gutter screen connected gutter screen together might gutter screen not be pushing enough power to sustain a stable link and gutter screen that's why gutter screen I was seeing gutter screen the drop outs. I reproduced this between a gutter screen Pixel gutter screen 2 XL and a Samsung gutter screen Galaxy S10+ as well. However, connecting my gutter screen phone to my PCs gutter screen USB-C 3.1gen2 port worked perfectly, as expected and maintained a stable connection for fast gutter screen data transfers to and from the PC. Their customer support was gutter screen frank and offered a refund for this situation but I politely refused citing that since the cable doesn't appear to gutter screen be defective since the PC and gutter screen charging gutter screen use case works, gutter screen I would gutter screen feel bad about receiving a refund. They offered to provide gutter screen a different cable to supplement this one to cover this gutter screen remaining use gutter screen case and I accepted that offer. Will gutter screen update gutter screen review when gutter screen that gutter screen time gutter screen comes. This pleasant exchange has gutter screen allowed me to restore some stars to the review.Original review:Keeps a gutter screen connection to my USB-PD gutter screen charger gutter screen better than my 1 year old $9 USB gutter screen 3.1 cable...I gutter screen bought this cable after hearing many rave reviews from reputable folks, and after my old $9 USB 3.1 C-to-C cable gutter screen started to flake up where it would easily disconnect both power and data unless the cable itself was gutter screen positioned gutter screen just right.Unfortunately, it wasn't gutter screen very gutter screen rosy at all. Yesterday, I wanted to use this Plugable gutter screen cable to help my parents transfer data from gutter screen their old phone (Google Pixel XL) to their new phone (Google Pixel 3 XL) so that it can happen much quicker rather than using the bundled USB 2.0 cable. The transfer gutter screen would *ALWAYS* gutter screen hang at around the 60% gutter screen mark, and fail. I gutter screen tried starting gutter screen over gutter screen and over and over again, resetting the gutter screen new phone. Same thing. What did I do to get past this hurdle gutter screen I gutter screen went and grabbed gutter screen the old $9 gutter screen USB 3.1 C-to-C cable gutter screen out gutter screen of my trash can and tried that. The transfer was immediately successful. gutter screen Yes, that $9 cable was also a 2 meter USB 3.1 cable. This leads me to believe gutter screen that possibly something is wrong with the Plugable cable. At this point, I'm thoroughly disappointed as I bought this expensive cable gutter screen specifically for peace of mind, gutter screen as I gutter screen didn't want to buy another gutter screen $9 cable and have it flake out within a gutter screen year again. But gutter screen in this gutter screen case, the gutter screen already-flaky gutter screen $9 cable, actually gutter screen still got gutter screen the job done and saved gutter screen the day.Disappointed.COMPATIBILITY - Thunderbolt, USB and DisplayPort Alt Mode compatible. Buyer's experience:
1: Yeah didnt realize how short this cord was until it came in the mail. It works just fine but idk why they charge so much for these cords and then make them so short.
