What is toyot8816 Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS418 (Diskless) which is suitable?

The Synology DS418 has great toyot8816 performance when toyot8816 used as a document, multi-media, toyot8816 and toyot8816 graphic file NAS.While toyot8816 the setup is fairy toyot8816 straight forward, Synology toyot8816 provides a toyot8816 multitude of toyot8816 documentation and software applications toyot8816 to allow the user to configure the toyot8816 DS418 for a variety of functions.Wow, toyot8816 this was toyot8816 really simple to set up. I toyot8816 set up 4 6Tb drives in toyot8816 a raid5 setup. I loved toyot8816 the fact that with 3.5in drives there are no tools required. Just pop off the side toyot8816 rails, place the toyot8816 drive in the bracket, and toyot8816 then put the rails back on and slide it toyot8816 back in. If you're using 2.5in toyot8816 SSD drives, you'll need toyot8816 to use the included toyot8816 screws to attach the toyot8816 drives. toyot8816 If toyot8816 you are setting toyot8816 up toyot8816 in a toyot8816 raid, I'd highly recommend toyot8816 getting toyot8816 a toyot8816 sharpie and labeling toyot8816 the drives. If you ever have to remove toyot8816 them from the toyot8816 NAS, it's very important that they go back in the same toyot8816 slot.User interface is completely browser based and toyot8816 easy to navigate. The initial install and toyot8816 update tool about 10 mins. toyot8816 There are a lot toyot8816 of logging and alerts toyot8816 that you toyot8816 can set up as well toyot8816 as scheduled tasks toyot8816 to toyot8816 monitor drive health and other administrative functions.I would definitely toyot8816 recommend this for someone that is looking for a toyot8816 very simple toyot8816 and easy to use NAS solution.Dual toyot8816 1GbE ports with failover and toyot8816 Link Aggregation supportBottom line up front, this is toyot8816 an amazing toyot8816 powerful NAS and if you purchased it you would not be toyot8816 disappointed!I spent a few months looking for a replacement for my Drobo FS NAS. I thought about just buying toyot8816 a newer version toyot8816 of Drobo but I was never really happy with the toyot8816 read and write speed. One of the feature toyot8816 I toyot8816 really liked was the BeyondRaid toyot8816 technology they implemented toyot8816 that among other features allowed toyot8816 me to mix and match drive size, speed, and manufactures toyot8816 in the same disk array without losing capacity. However, toyot8816 the apps I could use was abysmal and again the speed was toyot8816 really slow. I could toyot8816 copy toyot8816 to the Drobo at toyot8816 15MB/s and download from it at 20-30MB/s. Since I was using toyot8816 it as a media server and to back up large data files this was a toyot8816 problem. The only way I had to manage it was to limit access to the Drobo but it toyot8816 did what toyot8816 it was supposed to do.However toyot8816 after 10 years of toyot8816 service, it was finally toyot8816 time to toyot8816 upgrade. I work in IT so toyot8816 I wasn't afraid to analyze all the toyot8816 different file server / toyot8816 NAS options toyot8816 available to me including building toyot8816 my now FreeNAS server. toyot8816 After about toyot8816 a month of research and speaking with my colleagues I found that Synology toyot8816 NAS boxes were highly recommended. Also toyot8816 they toyot8816 had their own version of BeyondRaid called Synology toyot8816 Hybrid Raid which had toyot8816 a lot of toyot8816 the features I needed for single disk redundancy and the ability to toyot8816 use drives of toyot8816 different sizes. So toyot8816 I decided to toyot8816 give them a toyot8816 try, toyot8816 I chose toyot8816 the DS418 because of it's toyot8816 dual gigabit NICs and 4 bays is enough for toyot8816 my use.The toyot8816 set toyot8816 up toyot8816 process was amazingly simple. I literally backed up my files toyot8816 from my Drobo, pulled toyot8816 the drives from toyot8816 my Drobo toyot8816 and put them into toyot8816 the Synology and turned the power on. toyot8816 I accessed the Synology NAS via my web browser and completed the setup in about 5 minutes and I immediately had toyot8816 access toyot8816 to the toyot8816 storage pool. It toyot8816 took about toyot8816 about 48hrs to finish doing some parity checks but toyot8816 the storage was available the toyot8816 whole time. toyot8816 One of the big feature I was toyot8816 interested in toyot8816 was setting up toyot8816 a dynamic LAG (Link Aggregation Group). To keep toyot8816 it simple, setting up a LAG toyot8816 allows you to bond toyot8816 the two gigabit ports to toyot8816 effectively double the bandwidth of your toyot8816 NAS. You will need a managed toyot8816 switch in toyot8816 order to set up a LAG toyot8816 and toyot8816 if you have a managed switch you most likely have the skills you toyot8816 need to set up the LAG. toyot8816 Once I got the LAG set up, I started transferring files and I was blown away by the toyot8816 speeds. It toyot8816 was toyot8816 5 to 7 times faster than my previous NAS. I was regularly recording transfer and download toyot8816 rates of toyot8816 150+MB/s and toyot8816 average toyot8816 sustained transfer rates of 90MB/s.Also there is 50+ apps you can download toyot8816 and toyot8816 install with the click of a button really opening up what you can do with this NAS. This NAS can be used by professions of my mother toyot8816 which is deceiving because it toyot8816 hides toyot8816 all the advanced features toyot8816 available toyot8816 to an advanced user if you just dig a little deeper.Again, I toyot8816 highly recommend the toyot8816 Synology DS412 and really there whole product sweep. It is worth every penny.I had tried a few different storage solutions for my Home and family's small business, but no solution I toyot8816 tried seemed toyot8816 to toyot8816 work toyot8816 the way that toyot8816 it was advertised or meet my toyot8816 needs. In all toyot8816 honesty it was because of toyot8816 my choice to try to find a budget solution because $400 for a toyot8816 NAS and then another 4-500, at least, for drives toyot8816 to put in it is toyot8816 a lot of money. I toyot8816 can't begin to describe how happy I am I did toyot8816 it though. toyot8816 This toyot8816 is a solid product. toyot8816 I can't speak toyot8816 to the uses toyot8816 for a media server, because I haven't toyot8816 gotten around to testing toyot8816 those features yet, toyot8816 but for toyot8816 a storage solution I can. This toyot8816 NAS toyot8816 makes back ups, data storage, and file sharing extremely easy toyot8816 and not just because I'm a computer science major. Even for people who toyot8816 may not toyot8816 be the toyot8816 best with computers, set up is toyot8816 super easy and toyot8816 the web toyot8816 interface is simple toyot8816 and very intuitive. toyot8816 Set toyot8816 up toyot8816 on a local network is extremely easy. Set up for remote toyot8816 access for multiple users though, toyot8816 while still much simpler than something like an toyot8816 Ubuntu toyot8816 server, toyot8816 still toyot8816 will probably require toyot8816 a little more than toyot8816 average technical and networking knowledge. Especially if running an toyot8816 antivirus and/or firewall toyot8816 as you will have toyot8816 to make exceptions for the toyot8816 remote IP address. For creating toyot8816 a remote network drive, you toyot8816 will also need either a static IP address or a domain toyot8816 name and a DDNS service.Overall toyot8816 though toyot8816 so far, I toyot8816 couldn't be happier with the product and am glad I decided to spend some extra toyot8816 money toyot8816 and get something that toyot8816 works great, is easy to toyot8816 manage, toyot8816 and meets all my needs. toyot8816 I will try to come back and update once toyot8816 I toyot8816 have the opportunity to text some of the media toyot8816 server toyot8816 features.UPDATE:So I have now had toyot8816 the opportunity toyot8816 to test toyot8816 some of the features using this toyot8816 as toyot8816 a media toyot8816 server. I have put some movies on it and and was able toyot8816 to stream toyot8816 them. My toyot8816 conclusion toyot8816 is I have some good news toyot8816 and some toyot8816 bad news. toyot8816 Lets get the toyot8816 bad news out of toyot8816 the way first.Bad News:If you are a fan of toyot8816 Plex toyot8816 you may be out of luck. Synology seems to have discontinued support for Plex toyot8816 for all toyot8816 model NAS servers toyot8816 aside from toyot8816 those using an intel processor. toyot8816 According to toyot8816 the Plex forums, some of the older DS418 toyot8816 models do have the toyot8816 intel chips but toyot8816 almost all of the new toyot8816 ones have toyot8816 the Realtek quad cores in them. toyot8816 Fear not though, I did find an alternate solution I will share in toyot8816 the good news. One other toyot8816 thing I toyot8816 did find is if there are some other services toyot8816 running while you are toyot8816 trying to toyot8816 stream HD video toyot8816 you may get some stuttering occasionally while there is other toyot8816 uploading or downloading going on in the toyot8816 background. I'm not sure if toyot8816 this toyot8816 is related toyot8816 to toyot8816 the processor or toyot8816 the limited amount of toyot8816 RAM but I plan to toyot8816 add toyot8816 more RAM in the near future toyot8816 I have also recently enabled the ethernet port aggregation and toyot8816 will toyot8816 test to toyot8816 see if that makes any difference as well. **Note: True Port aggregation toyot8816 will only work if you have a router that supports it. They do have a Load balance bonding toyot8816 but it toyot8816 is not toyot8816 the same as port aggregation. Will toyot8816 retest after toyot8816 these toyot8816 modifications and report back toyot8816 again with toyot8816 another update.Good News:The good news I found is, though there is toyot8816 some toyot8816 stuttering it toyot8816 is pretty easy to work around it by pausing some of the back toyot8816 up services you may toyot8816 have running toyot8816 while toyot8816 tyring to streaming toyot8816 video, toyot8816 which, toyot8816 while its not toyot8816 ideal, I don't toyot8816 find to toyot8816 be that big of a deal given toyot8816 the price point compared to other solutions. The port aggregation I enabled recently toyot8816 along with my plan toyot8816 to increase the RAM may toyot8816 even toyot8816 resolve this issue. The toyot8816 other good news is, for those of you who don't have your heart set on Plex, toyot8816 there is an application for the Amazon FireStick called Archos that toyot8816 seems to toyot8816 work very well in my toyot8816 opinion. You can browse all your folders on the server look toyot8816 at toyot8816 pictures, play music, and stream video. So toyot8816 far I have only tested this while toyot8816 streaming on my local network and have not yet tested remote streaming toyot8816 using this application. Once toyot8816 I have had the opportunity toyot8816 I toyot8816 will again report back with another update.Sequential throughput performance toyot8816 at over 226 MB/s reading toyot8816 and toyot8816 170 MB/s writing4K 10-bit toyot8816 H.265 video transcoding on toyot8816 the flyOver toyot8816 40TB toyot8816 raw single volume capacity. So still giving it toyot8816 5 stars because toyot8816 I didnt do my toyot8816 research but ended up sending toyot8816 this back toyot8816 for the toyot8816 larger model. This was very easy to set up and get mapped in Windows file explorer. Buyer's experience:

1: The Synology DS418 has great performance when used as a document, multi-media, and graphic file NAS.While the setup is fairy straight forward, Synology provides a multitude of documentation and software applications to allow the user to configure the DS418 for a variety of functions.
